Branding, packaging, social media and web design for Grains for Good, a self imagined gluten free snack business that offers affordable and delicious gluten free snacks to people of all incomes.

Scope: Branding, Logo Design, Package Design, Social Media, Website Design, Copywriting

How can gluten free snacks be made affordable?

In an average grocery store, gluten free snacks are twice the price of snacks that are made with wheat. About 30% of all Americans eat gluten free, which makes this a big problem for individuals and families in this population living on a tight budget. I found that the main players in this issue are complex production processes and a lack of supply and demand.

The Solution

My solution to this problem comes in a theoretical gluten free snack brand called Grains for Good that utilizes cost effective materials, quality ingredients, efficient manufacturing processes and a bulk selling business model to make gluten free snacks accessible to people of all incomes.

Cost & Materials

To make the product as affordable as possible, Grains for Good uses rice flour, the most cost effective and quality alternative flour on the market, as the base ingredient in all of it's products.  Buying bulk rice grains and manufacturing the flour in house allows for a low cost that is not possible when buying from an outside distributor. The snacks are packaged in an affordable and eco friendly cellulose film pouch that keeps snacks fresh and can be composted right at home. These pouches are 16 oz which is about four times larger than most existing gluten free snack products. By selling in bulk, Grains for Good is able to give consumers more food for significantly less money.

The Identity

Of the Americans that eat gluten free, the people who are most affected by overpriced products are college aged people and low income parents of children and teens.

To appeal to these audiences, I designed the Grains for Good visual identity to be fun, approachable, and inviting. The logo utilizes hand drawn type, rounded forms, and illustrated rice grains that exude a sense of friendliness.

Package Design

The packages are an extension of this visual identity in a line of snacks called Star Bites. Each package has its own unique illustrations, color combinations and patterns that allow for differentiation, while still remaining a cohesive part of the identity. On the back of each package are process of making icons and a simple rice flour recipe that encourages at home gluten free baking.

Accessibility

Because accessibility is an important value of Grains for Good, I designed a website that allows consumers to purchase products no matter where they're located. This website includes a home page introducing the brand and its mission, a product page, a sales page, and an about page. Each sales page outlines exactly how much consumers are saving when they buy a bulk pack.

Social Media

As an extension of the existing identity, I created a social media page to further communicate the brand's personality and connect more directly with audiences. This page features colorful graphics that showcase products, fun gluten free recipes to try at home, and real people interacting with the snacks.
